Happy Birthday, Grant!

This guy is soooo loved by the two gals in his life! Laila loves making donut runs with him, helping him work on projects, and watching him fly his airplanes. He is such a good husband to Heidi, and a loving Daddy to Laila. He is our 'mild-mannered superhero' type of guy. Never says much unless he feels it's something very important - just sits by and listens. We are so thankful that he chose to make himself part of the family by marrying the lovely and talented Heidi. Hope your day is special and that you feel the LOVE!

Same....yet Different

Whitey and I check out a number of blogs, and sometimes I feel as tho I am eavesdropping on personal conversations, but there was a link from one of them this morning that sent me to this blog.

Because this young man just recently discovered that he had the same cancer as our son-in-law, it came as a personal sorrow for me as I read their story. I feel so very blessed and lucky that our own experience with this same diagnosis has a more brilliantly colored rainbow at the other end.

Please include in your prayers - Emily ...... a young mother who lives in Texas. She has a little boy, Grant, and is pregnant with a daughter, Aubrey. On 2/18, her husband noticed a few symptoms and went to the hospital and just 10 days later he passed away from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She really needs our prayers.

Friends

Friendship is a Sheltering Tree...Don't you just love those words? How true they are. Life without friends would be very lonely. I didn't get a birthday shout out for my friend on the 26th, but I want her to know how much I appreciate her friendship through the years. In the early days, we would console, encourage, and share life's dreams with each other. Now we cry over lifes disappointments, compare our ailments, and give one another suggestions on the best vitamin supplements.

The Sixth Challenge

The Sixth Challenge

I just recently hooked up with a gal that I worked with at Morgan's and she had this cute idea on her blog. So, before any of the other relatives do it first, I thought I'd beat you all to the punch and then you can share.
Here are the rules:
1. Go to the photo folder in your computer
2. Go to the 6th folder of photos.
3. Go to the sixth picture.
4. Put the picture on your blog and description of it.
5. Invite six friends to join the challenge.

This photo could not be more fitting for what I hold dear....it was taken in October 2008 at Heidi's house. She hosted Weston's 2nd Birthday party and it included every one of the grandkids + Heather in the picture. What makes it particularly poignant, is that Heather's husband had just begun chemo treatments for Burkitt's Lymphoma, and was in the hospital. Heather had been there with him on a daily basis for weeks, and was not able to even think about doing a party for her little boys birthday celebration. So Heidi, jumped in and offered to have the party, do the cake, and even had little bags of party favors for all the kids!

I am so thankful for family, and for the opportunity it affords us to help one another, and show appreciation for what we hold dear to our hearts. These little kids all have so much fun with one another, and enjoy the times they are together. They run, jump, scream, and expend every inch of enthusiasm in their little bodies. NOISY? Yes! But how boring life would be without them!

Kloyie's Diorama

Kloyie invited her Dad to school on Friday to check out her project for Science. It was a diorama that depicted the evolution of the grasslands in Australia. She had typed up a written report, made clay figures of a Koala and a Dingo, and was able to answer questions about her research. There was the bush and grasses that Koala's eat, the dingoes, which eat the Koala's, and the waste left by the dingoes that make up compost for the brushes to grow, which, in turn, the Koala's eat. The Circle of Life, so to speak. GREAT JOB, Kloyie. I'm so proud of what you learned doing this project.

Grandma Great and I also went over to see her presentation and took a look around her classroom. I noticed that there was a display outside her door that had hearts with the words, "LOVE is" written on the outside of them. On the inside, Kloyie had written that 'love is when her mother makes her breakfast and drives her to school, and when her sister is nice to her.'


We then walked down the hall to Skyla's room where they had displayed pictures of themselves and the statement about what they would do if they were President. Grand-daughters RULE!

Happy Birthday, Nadine!

Before the day is done, I want to tell my SIS Happy Birthday, and how much I love and appreciate her. I lived with them for 5 years and love her 4 girls as sisters. It was a time when I learned so many things, acquired wonderful friends, and realized how much time and effort is put into 'family'.

Happy Birthday, Connor-man!


This boy brings such joy and excitement into our lives! He is chuck full of happiness and hi-jinx; he loves to play games on his playstation, ride on anything with wheels, engage in contact sports {he just recently took up Karate}, spend time with his cousins, and is doing GREAT in school. Some ask if he is an artist like his Dad...yeah, not so much. He's only 7 today - but we buy him size 10! clothes. He's gonna be a tall, handsome guy when he's the finished product!

Happy birthday to our 1st grandson - we love you and want you to have a great day! Looking forward to the party on Saturday.

President's Day - Past & Present

Heather, Taylor, Weston, Laila and I all attended the President's Day program at Connor's school on Friday. What a TREAT! These kids have so much enthusiasm, and perform with gusto! I got some pix of Connor, and then reminded Mike that I thought I had pix of him at the same age in the same type of program. See what you think....like Father, like Son. Both had speaking parts, but somehow, Connor looks like he's enjoying himself a lot more!

If you want to get off the rollercoaster of Blah! Taylor and I heard this the other day, and she was very inquisitive about the whole concept of what the rollercoaster of BLAH was exactly. Being the sardonic cynic {is that a double negative?} that I am, I went into a long explanation of what a thrill ride life is and how the Blahs will sometimes weigh us down, so that we do not enjoy the ride.

When I read this gals blog this morning, I came to the conclusion that the myth about Men being from Mars, and Women are from Venus is true! We are definitely hard-wired differently. A man approaches everything analytically and from a logical standpoint. Women feel their way through life. Men do it with aggression - Women do it with attitude! You know how it is implied that men think with their.... well, you know. This gal put a different, more appealing spin on that story - after all, it's always acceptable and more fun to make fun of yourself than at the cost of another, right?

I guess I should 'Thank Heaven' for the differences; but sometimes I just want to throw my hands in the air and ask 'Why?'

Happy Birthday, Owen!

One day after Lincoln's birthday (who was a very wise man), and the day before Valentine's Day (the day for love and romance), comes my BIL's birthday (who is also very wise and a romantic at heart)! He is a retired school teacher, and an artist (he fits into the family very well). He and Fay travel from the mid-West to the Pacific No.West on a yearly cycle to hit fairs (and other activities) and draw characature sketches. They have alot of fun doing this, and love to visit with the people who frequent his booth.

He comes from a large family and is a twin (the better looking of the two, he sez!). He is a great defender of his Faith, he loves to debate, he has the greatest time with puns and trivia, and he enjoys good stories (of which he has authored a few). Hope you're reading this while out on the road, so you know I'm wishing you a great day!

Gary has finished up this weeks chemo, and they did a biopsy on the spots that the scan picked up last week. They have come back as a negative! He will be released this afternoon, and can tentatively go back to work for the next 6 weeks. At the end of the 6 weeks, he will be having another PET scan to determine what is happening. The doctors have told them {that in that time frame} there should either be great improvement, or there will be excess growth; at which time, they will determine whether to do the bone marrow transplant. But for now, we are so thankful for the thoughts and prayers in his behalf. We know that prayers are being answered, and that Gary will be on the mend fully soon. We love you guys - maybe you'll be able to spend the first holiday in 4 months together doing something FUN!

Well, we were all hoping and praying for the best when Gary had a recent PET scan and his clinical follow-up today. However, we were met with the somber news that there are still two spots in his back {possibly near his kidneys or adrenal gland that the doctors are suspicious of. So, he will be admitted into the hospital tomorrow for another round of chemo-needless to say, he's very discouraged and worried that maybe he'll never be rid of this monster! And then there's the job; he was excited to start back to work this week, and although he was fatigued each evening, still felt positive about everything. Our hopes and faith, in the healing hands of God, is that he will progress through the next 21 days with renewed health and strength.

I just keep thinking 'what a dirty deal'; we gotta start this all over again?; we were just catching our breath, and beginning to breathe easy....then I think about what Gary must be thinking, and I want to smack myself!

I pray that when we reach the summit of this next mountain, there will be a lovely vacation spot of Gary's choosing within our gaze. 'First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.'

Happy Birthday, Laila!

Today is our Laila-Bug's 4th birthday. One look at that face with those beautiful eyes, and you know that you're gonna be suckered into anything she asks for. She can turn on the charm with a smile and wrap her arms around your neck to lead you to 'her destination'. She especially loves to play with her cousins, take walks, and go to the playground at the park; spending time at her Mom's favorite store - Hobbly Lobbly; going on a donut run with her Dad on Sunday mornings; being involved with doing art projects with Mom, and helping Dad fly RC airplanes. She loves kitties and puppies and the color PINK!

She is loving, inquisitive, angelic, lively, independent and has the attitude of the typical 4 year-old. Happy 4th Birthday - We love you, Laila.

Who would've guessed that from Mom's 2 children it would grow to 21 bundles of craziness?! 2009 Inauguration of Pres. Barack Hussein Obama

I have to say that my heart was turned around, and tears filled my eyes, as I turned on the TV this morning to watch what was happening at the Inauguration. Words that come to mind is surreal, overwhelming, pride, hope, excitement . . . to witness the sea of humanity with flags of red, white and blue waving above their heads; to hear the cheers, hope and excitement in people’s voices as they were questioned about their thoughts on the day and the impact it will have in their lives and in the life of our Country; to gaze on the many stoic military and security figures who stand watch and assist those in attendance; to witness the beauty of a chilly, but sunny day, shining down on the nation’s Capitol and all the wonderful monuments surrounding it; the suns rays gleaming through the stars and stripes of the flags wafting in the wind; taking note of the ‘Who’s Who’ from Hollywood and ‘everyone who’s anyone; there to witness the 44th President, Barack Hussein Obama, take the Oath of Office. The Dream uttered from the Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 28, 1963 by Martin Luther King, finally reached the walls of the White House and is coming to fruition.

The things I noticed: Michelle Obama was friendly and smiling, and watching each move as her queue from Laura Bush; Laura Bush was ever gracious, Pres.-Elect Obama smiling and winking with genuine warmness and was exuberant {crowds cheering O-BAM-A!}; Poor G.W. seemed sad and pensive - wondering if the crowds are cheering his exit or Obama’s entrance; the Military required to salute – why doesn’t the majority of Americans’ put their hand over their heart when the flag passes by? On the fashion side – is Michelle Obama color blind? A yellow dress with chartreuse gloves and a red purse. . . some people would disagree. Maybe it’s me with no fashion sense!

There have been few times when I have been so glued to the TV as I have been today. From 1960-1975 we were involved in the Vietnam war – it was a time when I would watch the updates every evening on the news to see how many more of our boys were killed in a firefight – and by ‘our boys’, I mean guys that I knew and went to school with. I know of at least half a dozen of them that didn’t come home alive, and a lot of them didn’t come home the same! There were 58,000 Americans killed and another 304,000 injured. In 1963, a very popular and beloved President Kennedy was assassinated, and we watched in disbelief the happenings of that day and days to follow. In 1965 civil unrest took the streets of the Watts area in Los Angeles, Ca.; in 1968, another assassination, this time Robert F. Kennedy. In 1981 Princess Diana wed Prince Charles in a fairytale wedding. In 1986 the space shuttle Challenger exploded upon takeoff and all on board were killed. In 1989 the Berlin Wall is taken down to the cheers of many and marked the end of the Cold War; the Gulf War in 1991; the death of Princess Diana in 1997; the unthinkable act of terrorism upon the United States of America with the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001 and the resulting Operation Enduring Freedom war on Afghanistan. These are all major happenings that have held my attention – Not to down play natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, and the tsunami in Indonesia, but was I so disinterested or unaware of other important times in History?

I was especially moved by words from the Pastor Rick Warren when he invoked ‘wisdom to lead with humility; courage to lead with integrity; and compassion to lead with generosity.’ Much of Obama's address was almost entirely free of campaign style rhetoric - he talked of "gathering clouds and raging storms" and the need at a time as dire as this one for all Americans to do their part to make the nation great again. He stated that ‘Greatness is never a gift – it must be earned’.

After taking the Oath of Office, he looked forward and waved to the throngs of 2 million plus roaring crowd of people with cannons booming . . . .

And then he said, “So Help Me God”!

The rest of the program was frou-frou. But then, Rev. Lowery stepped up to the podium for the benediction. Loved the perfect ending to a lovely morning with these words:

‘Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. {Stick it to the White Man...}. That all those who do justice and love mercy, say Amen’.

They speak of the Peaceful transfer of Power - but the weight of the World is now on Pres. Obama's shoulders. The World is Watching - Welcome to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

The clock is ticking...

Three million people will flock to Washington DC tomorrow to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama, who will become America's 44th President. Obama (47) will take his Presidential oath at 12 noon local time on January 20th, 2009, and will be the first black leader in the country's history. The inauguration party will be the biggest of all time and is costing $150 million! Maintaining security throughout Obama's celebrations will be the biggest challenge in the history of the Secret Service. F16 fighter jets and drones will be watching from the skies.

Although I was hesitant to get behind this new President and his V.P., the heaviness of this position, and his willingness to make a difference gives me hope that maybe he will do a better job, or at least as good, as the past Presidents {Besides, what choice do we have?}. I frankly don't believe that there is a viable person out there that could solve ALL the problems with our economy, our situation in the world, and the energy crisis {and I think it quite brave of him to take it on-I sure wouldn't want to!}. But in looking over his original platform I am putting my faith in a divine guidance that he may follow, and his youth to be able to persevere and accomplish what he would strive to do for our country, the wonderful USA!

She is a very busy gal, what with trying to move real estate in a sluggish market, lending her voice to radio and TV ads, traveling to various locations to participate in Plan B {a play about radioactive fallout effects of downwinders in the 50's}, and her other job as wife to a busy Tom and Mother to 3. Happy 80th Birthday, Tom!

Me and my big brother, Tom! Pictures like this of him and me together are really the only memories I have of that time of my life. There isn’t a memory of Tommy I have that doesn’t include Margie and Leanne. He turned 20 and was married to Margie the same year I was born, so you can see why my memories would not be just of him and me as brother and sister. I know there were a few times during my childhood, when he and Margie offered to take care of me before and after my Mother passed away. I did live with them in Clearfield, for a short time before I went over to live with my sister Nadine. He has always been a colorful storyteller, with the memory to remember dates, places, people names, and times! He was the most adventurous of all of us, I believe, as evidenced in his birthday tribute from last year and Whitey's blog entry.

Happy Birthday, Tom. I know we can't expect you to live forever, but you sure have enabled us to enjoy your 80 years thusfar. We love you and had such a great time celebrating with you last night.

Patience is a Virtue . . .

January 5, 2009 - Today we find out if modern medical technology, priesthood blessings, faith & prayers, and 3 months of chemo have cured Gary of Burkitt's Lymphoma. He has been in the hospital since last Wednesday with the last regimen; and after another lumbar puncture, some blood checks, a CAT scan and possibly another bone marrow extraction, they will be able to determine whether there is still any cancer. He is very up-beat and positive, and feels that he is cured. When he was admitted into LDS Hospital in October, they have had only 3 other cases of Burkitt's - and in the time frame that he has been treated, there have been 3 in 3 months! Eerie...

What strength and courage he has had, facing at first a very scarey diagnosis and possible outcome, to one of the very best outcomes for this disease. If you would, please pray especially that the hands and eyes of the medical staff, who will be running the tests today and making a determination of the results, are guided by a loving Heavenly Father. And of course, let's pray and believe together that we will know definite results soon from these tests. Our family is so humbled by your love and support. Thank you to each one of you who are praying for us and taking our needs before the Lord. I feel at peace - this can only come through our Heavenly Father.

Auld Lang Syne?

Harry: What does this song mean? For my whole life I don't know what this
song means. I mean, 'Should old acquaintance be forgot". Does that mean we
should forget old acquaintances or does it mean if we happen to forget them we
should remember them, which is not possible because we already forgot them!?
Sally: Well may be it just means that we should remember that we forgot them
or something. Anyway it's about old friends.

These lines are from one of my favorite movies, When Harry Met Sally - this movie had many great lines that go down in the annals of moviedom. But particularly, as we look towards New Year's Eve, and the beginning of a New Year, may we remember friends that we have had who may now be gone, friends who surround us and are a daily source of inspiration and support to us, and strangers who may become friends to our future.

Huh? What? You mean I missed it all?

See Sue {Oh! you don't see Sue?}--she is so tired of the holidays! Sue has been sick with the stomach flu since last Sunday. Everything she has eaten is recycled ever so quickly! See Kloyie and Skyla build a gingerbread house with Curt and Matt-Sue is mysteriously absent. See Sue's photos of the annual Christmas party that Heather took because Sue was laying on the couch or the bathroom floor for all festivities! See how cute the grandkids are...they love Christmas. They love Santa. They love performing the Nativity story for Aunt DiAnne and Uncle Glen & Co. They love that Grandma is quietly composing herself and her digestive system by sipping some hot chicken bouillon. See Sloane open her presents Christmas morning? See no pictures of Connor? See Sue take down Christmas on the 26th? She's so done with Christmas...music is off the blog, lights & wreaths are packed away, and it's time for SPRING!

Flying with Eagles....

Taylor is the son of Tom & Teri and grandson of Glen &DiAnne.

Taylor's Eagle Project is a stone cairn which houses a time capsule and a "Cache to Eagle" geo-cache. The geo-cache is kind of like a treasure hunt where scouts will go online and get coordinates that with the help of a GPS they'll find their way to the cairn. Once there, they'll sign in and be led to all the other Eagle projects around the church grounds. Apparently there is a big geo-cacheing community and they go hunting these things up in the mountains, around town and all along the Wasatch front.

The time capsule contains things from our family, the church congregation, the city, etc. Examples of items were: key to the city from Fruit Heights along with history and city mtg. minutes, church history and photos, newspapers from the recent election, Grandma Lola's jello mold and recipes, letter from grandma and grandpa, happy meal toys and a pile of credit card offers with commentary by Tom on all of society's mis-steps. Basically a bunch of stuff that will either confuse or fascinate folks when it's opened in 75 years! It also contains Taylor's journey through his Eagle with print and photo. These were all sealed in plastic and put into a huge duffle bag that was then placed into the cairn.

He had a lot of help and used lots of skills he didn't know he had. We collected rocks from around the church property to cover it and the plaques were donated by a guy who had Taylor help him make them. The structure is finished and tonight he will set up the coordinates online. We'll celebrate with his ceremony in January.

Congratulations Taylor on this accomplishment-we know it required much more work and effort than just what you put into this project.

Happy Birthday, Gary!

There is something about coming through the tail end of a tornado-that gives you pause, and makes you count your blessings. The idea that something can creep into your life, and take a hold of every waking hour, every day, every week for months is both frightening and humbling. Such has been the last few months for Gary and Heather.

I just want to wish Gary a very Happy Birthday; and let him know how proud we are of him, and how thankful we are for his strength and courage. Here's hoping and praying that the new year will bring you all that you hope and wish for.


Heather and Gary would also like me to thank all the family and friends for their concern and support during this difficult time. They are especially grateful for keeping them in your thoughts and prayers, and ask that you continue to do so. We know without a doubt, that prayer has been the thing that has brought about the miracle of healing and the knowledge that 'this too shall pass'.

What started out yesterday as a birthday catchup celebration for 4 nieces ended up being a gab-fest and sounding board for everyone's ailments - And to top it off 2 of the 4 birthday girls weren't able to make it! I guess this gives us an excuse to do it again. We do have Teri's and Michele's birthdays coming up. We met at Applebee's and had a delicious lunch - a few of them had the French Onion soup to warm up their innards, as there was an Arctic wind a wailing. Little Haddie entertained us by putting stickers all over her face and in her hair, and Casey sat quietly honing his skills at the gameboy. We asked him if he was getting tired of coming to lunch with all us old ladies - no comment, just a smile. He is such a cute guy and was very excited when his Mom left and came back with a gingerbread house to put together. I wish I had taken pix - even brought my camera, but completely forgot until we were all getting up to leave.

It is so much fun to be with this group and engage in the holiday spirit - even if only for an hour! Happy belated birthdays to Janette, Leanne, Clydene, and Cheryl.

See what I mean about Dec. birthdays? With the hub-bub of shopping, baking, cooking {all of which I don't do!}, concert attending, parties, etc. I neglected to wish my DIL birthday greetings on the 14th! She is a whirlwind of activity and ambition and keeps her two guys well in tow.

Happy Birthday Greetings, Christmas Cheer, and all that Good Stuff!

You've heard the saying 'a day late and a dollar short' - well, I want to wish BIL Glen and Cheryl a Happy Birthday. It seems that in the chasm of holiday spirit, their birthdays sometimes get tucked away in the corner as an, "OH Yeah! BTW, hope you had a nice birthday"!

I met DiAnne & Glen after they had dinner and we attended a community chorale program the night of his birthday. It was directed by a gal that grew up in the same neighborhood in Layton as us. And last night, DiAnne invited me to take Glen's place for the Christmas program at the Conference Center in SLC. Can I just say I felt like Charlie Bucket winning the lucky golden ticket for this! Believe it or not, it's the first time I've actually seen/heard the Tabernacle Choir sing, other than TV; and the first time I had been in this wonderfully architected building -- what a massive ediface, with such amazing sound capabilities, and beautiful decor. The spirit and sounds of Christmas lifted my somewhat heavy heart, and the guest artists, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Edward Herrmann were inspiring. Thanks so much DiAnne, for inviting me to go.

People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed. Never throw out anybody. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of your arm. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands - one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.

The beauty of a woman is not the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows. And the beauty of a woman only grow with passing years.

What's on Your Christmas List?

I picked up an excellent article to read the other day, that addressed the issue of how to take control of the holiday season, without allowing it to take control of our life! We all get caught up in the gift buying, the baking and cooking, the parties, and forget sometimes that it really is about spending quality time with the ones we love. And with the economy pinching our pocketbooks, maybe we should remember that the first Christmas 'came without ribbons - it came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags' as we are reminded by the Grinch.

If you're feeling like you're spread too thin: 1} Narrow your focus of the things that you feel just need to get done. 2} Don't make it worse by stressing over your productivity. 3} PLAN early for the tasks at hand. 4} Don't be afraid to say 'NO' when you feel you can't do more. 5} Prioritize your day - work at work, and enjoy your holiday with friends and family. Don't mix the two, or you will be less effective and joyful at both.

If we de-stress our daily lives, we will enjoy the holiday more, and be more willing to give the ultimate gift - that of our time, our love, and our devotion to the true meaning of Christmas.

So, let's everyone take a deep breath . . .
