Family time well spent on a sunny, Sunday afternoon!

Vicky was so impressed with my 'techno talents and slideshow wizardry' that I thought I would do another one. They're simple to do and a fun way to get photos on the blog without having to mess with photoshopping! We met a few of the kids at Pine View yesterday for Father's Day. Matt had gone golfing with a friend and was headed into SLC with Alysa's family and Heather & Gary were doing something with his Dad. We had a good time with the floats, making sand castles, and playing on the swing. There's not alot of beach, so Mike and Shari and Curt headed up there around 7AM to scout out a spot for the rest of us. Connor and Laila had a great time and were completely exhausted by the time they headed home and everyone got cooked to the "lobster" point!

Happy Father's Day to all the Men!

To the Dad's in my life - the one who is a Dad to my children, and to the men who are Dad's to my grandchildren! To my brothers, and the men in my extended family - I Love you All!

Happy Father’s Day
Sue Shifflett

Dad ** We Love you
For all you say and do.
When we have problems ** thick or thin
You’re always there to guide us through.

We’ve had our share of arguments
& disagreements too.
But in the end, we always tried to do
What we thought you’d want us to.

You’re always giving us advice
On which road in life to take.
And suggesting a more “logical” way
When decisions we must make.

You taught us how to ride a bike
Your taught us how to fly a kite
You taught us what was wrong from right
You taught us how to stand up and fight.

You taught us that we must remain true **
To our God, our family, and ourselves.
You showed us that you loved us
By allowing us to dream, while keeping out feet firmly planted on Earth.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad

Skyla's & Sloane's birthday partys

Happy Birthday, Elma!

Elma and her 3 Beautiful daughters!

I just wanted to wish my sweet sis-in-law, Elma, the happiest of birthdays. She is the matriarch of our Fry family, and we all love being around her. She always welcomes everyone into her home, with such warmth and love. Happy Birthday, El!

Happy Birthday, Jeff!

Jeff – from diapers to dungarees
You were a cowboy “at Heart”.
Boots & hat, holster & guns
Were the last to come off and the first things on.
And with the same abandonment from your childhood days
You greet and meet people, and they become your friends.

Jeff is the son of DiAnne & Glen. He is the consummate Master Dutch Oven chef - he can plan and execute any company, church, or family function; he loves to hunt, fish, and golf {generally PLAY}! He and Karen have two beautiful daughters, Shaylee and Kristen, and a son, Ryan who is serving a mission in Ohio. He is currently fulfilling his role as the patient Father of the Bride with replies to anything asked of him with ‘Don’t worry about it – Money’s not a problem’, ‘Whatever she wants’, and ‘Yes, Dear’!

When I asked Shay if she had any dirt on her Dad, she was more than happy to supply me with a couple of cute stories: Ha ha! funny you ask.....well today we went and finalized stuff at the reception center and photographer for my wedding. At the reception center he took Kristen up to the Brides room to show her while I was signing some papers and he got teary eyed for the second time! When we left the center, he had a warm fuzzy feeling. Ha, he's a little bit emotional when it comes to wedding plans!!
Another thing is, he's going to play softball with our ward tomorrow night and with it being Friday the 13th he's afraid something might happen...about 4 years ago he played softball with the ward and pulled both hamstrings...not a pretty sight for him but for us it was hysterical!!!! So GO JEFF in Softball tomorrow! Hmmm...tomorrow he is going fishing with Grandpa Glen bright and early, maybe playing golf too....other then that I think that's all the dirt I know. Basically all he does is work and hang out with my mom and me, since I don't have
anyone to hang out with.

Jeff is always a 'cut up' and I just love this photo of him – he kinda looks like a Ninja Buddha!

Happy Birthday Jeffy, and love...

Happy 1st Birthday, Sloane!

Baby Sloane

You floated in on angel wings
With golden curls and eyes as blue as the sky
Nestling yourself into the crook of our arms and in our hearts
From now until the end of time

Your ‘firsts’ have been a joy to see
Awe-struck at your first smile
Inspired by the cute baby sounds – babbles and coos
and the funny expressions on your face
The cute way you put one arm over your eyes
and rub your head when you are sleepy.

Daddy calls me ‘Booger’ and Momma calls me ‘LoaneyLoo’
Grandma Susie thinks my smile is cheesy
And ‘Tiny Mite’ is what I’m called, by my Grandma Sue
Soft & Pink - Sweet baby candy
Children are like seeds - Nurtured with Love
In each there is a promise of the Future.

Happy 1st Birthday, Sloane; you've stolen a corner of my heart!
.

Happy 6th Birthday, Skyla!

Sweet, Sassy & Sensational Six

Six years of hi-jinx, teasing, and fun
Six years of wondering where she is & what she has done
Six years of mischievous tricks and giggles
Six years of wonderment and wiggles
Six years of twinkling blue eyes, and a smile that won’t end
Six years of being sweet, sassy and sensational!

Her friends are Julia and Emma
Her favorite movies are Monster House, Transformers, and anything scary!
Her favorite toy is from Disneyland - the lion Simba
She loves horses, and zebras, and cats, I think
Her favorite colors are red & pink

So much to be learned in your first year of school
Letters (big & small), numbers and shapes
Learning to read and recognizing patterns
Reading stories, her favorite is ‘no David no!’
Playing games, learning manners, and obeying rules.

Every child is a story, yet to be told.
The years have gone by . . .
Now you're 6 years old!
You’re a whirling dervish of activity and noise
Six years of Skyla is what we’re celebrating!

Happy Birthday, Skyla
Love, Grandma Shifflett

Spent a beautiful sunny Sunday at the car show today with Shari and Connor. We got to drive her Dad's vintage Olds convertible over to the show. Met up with some old friends who have a classy Harley/Hearse setup - check their site out. I told Scott I'd set up a reservation and if I wasn't there by the time I'm 70, he can come pick me up -- I'll be ready!

We took Connor's picture on it and then went over to the show area, where they were showing off a fire breathing jelly belly wagon! The flames actually smelled like cinnamon -- you know I was there! This thing was so dang hot, it about burned the hair o
ff our head!

Spring has Sprung!

AHHH! Spring…it conjures up images of raindrops, and rainbows, and blossoms and flowers. Soccer, and baseball; and while the temperature has fluctuated from 87 to 47 degrees in the last two days, it does seem that spring is actually on its way. My little crabby apple tree is exactly a month later with its blossoms than it was last year, so we must’ve had a much cooler, wetter, later spring this year! And the iris’ that I picked up from a fellow in Centerville last year, are blooming, so I’m happy. My green thumb can be verified! I’m going over to the nursery tonight and pick up some petunias and impatiens, along with some little shrubs to put in the flowerbeds. Why exactly did we leave the two-bedroom apartment up in Boise for the joy of home ownership? Oh yeah…the grandkids!

Kloyie and Skyla finished up their soccer season last Saturday; but Connor and Taylor now have t-ball games twice a week. It brings back memories of when our three boys were playing baseball all summer. We even met a friend of Matt’s, who has a boy on Connor’s team, and a 3 year-old named Matthew! Connor’s first game was freezing cold – we were wrapped up in blankets, with our hoods and gloves on! I did get a couple of good pictures of him hitting the ball, and you can see he was able to make a run with the hit!

Taylor and two other little girls play on a team with boys! She’s being a good sport about playing with them.

FIELDS OF MEMORIES

With Memorial Day this weekend, and the 'brain fog' I have been in recently, I thought I would just offer up something that I had written a few years ago.

I gaze upon the sea of green -
White stones bob up and down across the horizon.
Birds are chirping, a gentle breeze is blowing through the leaves of the trees.
Dusk ‘til dawn – this is such a lovely, restful place –
For the Dead.

I come here sometimes to collect my thoughts
To get a perspective of what life is really about.
I think of the people that I’ve known throughout my life
Specifically, the ones who are among those resting here.

I wonder if they’re aware of the worldly toils and tribulations that we are facing.
I yearn for their touch and the sound of their voice.
And when I come to this place –
Both physically and mentally –
I wish that I could be there with them.

I want to linger a littler longer…

Happy Mothers Day!

A Mother’s Arms - Sue Shifflett

Our first experience with love is the touch of our Mother,
As we are placed in her arms.
We are cuddled, fed, bathed, and comforted.
This security becomes the fertile groundwork for
All other relationships in our life.

As a toddler, trusting and innocent;
We venture out into a harsh world,
Where words and actions of others may hurt us.
So we return to that place which is our safest haven – Home.

Young people search for love and acceptance in a chaotic world;
Moving farther from the home fires,
And veering into territories that are strange and unfamiliar.
Friends, music, rebellion, action and danger –
Yearning to prove their Individuality
And striking out for Independence.

Though we move away from that which we know to be true,
There comes a time when the loving arms of our Mother
Beckons us to once again partake of the love and security
That reminds us of a simpler time and place.
When every care was attended to –
Where we could curl up in a warm ball

And know that everything would be all right.

Happy Mothers Day to all the wonderful women in my life - daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces and friends; who have always been there showing me love, teaching me by example, and sharing their hearts. I love you all.

Happy Birthday to Wayne & DiAnne!

When pictures from your childhood
Are in faded black & white.
When people start to notice
That you’ve lost more than your height . . .

When all these things start happening
Don’t let it wreck your mood.
It’s Nature’s way of telling you
You’re one maturing DUDE!

I have this big Sister-her name is DiAnne.
Even though we have disagreed at times
I look up to her --
She is someone beside me lending a hand.
Offering words that say, “I understand” . . .

Sister, you taught me
What it is to share,
And what it is to receive.
You gave me Love, joy, togetherness,
Loyalty, support, friendship.

We're Gonna Have a Wedding . . . .

In the movie Father of the Bride, George{Stanley Banks}, played by Steve Martin, has some things to say that may hit home for the Campbells. He says: “I used to think a wedding was a simple affair. Boy and girl meet, they fall in love, he buys a ring, she buys a dress, they say I do. I was wrong. That's getting married. A wedding is an entirely different proposition”.

HEY YA'LL,
WE JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT SHAYLEE GOT ASKED THE BIG QUESTION LAST NIGHT AND GOT A RIPPIN' DIAMOND!
KINDA COOL, HUH? GIVE HER A CALL IF YOU WANT. WE'LL LET YOU KNOW MORE AS THINGS GET SET IN STONE.

THANKS FOR BEING SUCH GREAT FAMILY & FRIENDS. YOUR EXAMPLES HAVE HELPED HER A LOT. {Father of the Bride’s version}

Shaylee called me this morning to say she got engaged last night up Adams Canyon. I told her that he wanted her to be breathless when he proposed! {Grandma’s version}

{And now the rest of the story from the Bride . . . .}
Yeah, my Dad did tell me he sent out an email to friends and family! Paige & another aunt came to my work, to give hugs and look at my ring! Well here is my story...Nick left yesterday morning to head out to Chicago for the summer, he's selling Satellite Systems as a summer job and is actually the Manager of the office. He has about 14 kids going out with them, under his direction. All weekend we hardly played-we just packed! Monday after work I went up there and was an absolute mess. I left for ten minutes to go help my Dad put up a sign I made for Nick just saying Good Luck & Goodbye on the highway. When I got back Nick decided he HAD to go on a hike up Adams Canyon - just get away from packing and all that. I was kinda like...ah ok, not too happy but I went. We hiked up and I didn't want to go too far into the woods because it freaks me out! We had a baby lantern and a headlamp. By the way it was so nice out Monday night! So we got around this corner and there was a little fire going. Nick wanted to go and sit by the fire but I was freaked out; ‘How did it start? IDIOT people just leave fires going.... I didn't know what the heck was going on. Nick went along with it and finally we just sat down. We talked and he said how much he loves me and gave me some flowers and then told me to stand up. At that point I kinda was like ‘ah…oh, what's happening?...then he went on talking and then asked!! Nick's sister Kenzi and McKay came out of the trees - they had started the fire and set up everything!! I was crying and of course said YES! It was pretty late when we got up there so I was really tired, but that’s pretty much the story. He wanted to fly me to Chicago but he said he just couldn't leave me without a ring and fun-fun wedding plans!! All night he kept saying YOU’RE MY FIANCEE! - It was cute. One of our first fun dates was a Sunday hike up Adams Canyon, so now we have two great memories!! We're planning on Oct 10th (10-10-08) maybe he'll remember anniversary's now!

Rewind to Christmas 2007 - Jeff sat on Santa’s lap and said he’d really like a son-in-law. Looks like there really IS a Santa Claus!

CONGRATULATIONS to Shaylee {Jeffs oldest} and Nick! You’re in for the Ride of Your Life……

Sometimes in Life, you find a Special Love. Someone who changes your life just by being a part of it. Someone who can make you laugh until you cry. Someone who makes you believe there is good in the World. Someone who holds your hand and shares his Heart. Someone who convinces you that there is a door, unlocked and just waiting for you to open it.

Happy Birthday, Craig!

Snakes 'n Snails 'n puppy dog tails.
Mischief in your eyes and smile
Impetuous, Carefree, Adventure in your heart
These are the same boyish behaviors that give us our “kick start”!

Craig is Glen and DiAnne's son; he and his cutie-pie wife, Denise, have two lovely daughters, Danielle and Jordan.

He looks almost too comfortable in that spot, doesn't he? Hope you have a great year!

The ROLLERCOASTER ride we call Utah weather! And we wonder why Utahns are taking antidepressants at twice the rate per capita of other states?! PROOF that the CALIFORNIA sun is good for the soul!

The typical symptoms of SAD include depression, lack of energy, increased need for sleep, a craving for sweets and weight gain. Symptoms begin in the fall, peak in the winter and usually resolve in the spring. Some individuals experience great bursts of energy and creativity in the spring (which lasted all of 15 minutes two days ago!) or early summer. Some people with SAD have mild or occasionally severe periods of mania during the spring or summer.

Logically speaking, this would be the explanation for my moodiness; my lack of ambition; craving ice cream, candy, and pastries; and wanting to strangle the weatherman when I see him at the local grocery store! I'm left with the delusion of wondering when SPRING is finally gonna peek out from the grey?

Saturday Soccer!

I spent yesterday afternoon with Alysa and Sloane. We took her for a walk over to the park close to their house to feed the ducks, geese, and seagulls . . .Yeah, mostly seagulls! Sloane is not too sure she likes the birdlife, and we had a gaggle of geese chase after us honking wildly; we must've gotten too close to their nests.

I ventured out this morning for Skyla's soccer game - What a great little soccer player! She really hustled this week, and was "in the Zone"! These little gals are so much fun to watch - just out there for the fun of running, kicking the ball, and enjoying the cheers from the sidelines. And I believe that the Pink Butterflies won their match today...YEA!

While Skyla was on the field, Kloyie was demonstrating her somersaults and headstand.

At 1 pm, Heidi, Laila, and I went to Kloyie's game. Kloyie got alot of attention and cheering from the sidelines to keep the ball going downfield. It was a much warmer day this week for the games, but very windy! I guess we have another storm blowing in.

Happy Birthday, Taylor!

Taylor is Teri's youngest son, and the 9th grandchild of DiAnne and Glen.

This is Taylor's school pix from this year. He's in 9th grade, loves classic rock and participates in the "School of Rock" where he plays guitar, bass and does vocals.

He's looking forward to a trip to China with other Jr. High students this summer. (In keeping with family tradition), he'll also start his first job this summer at Lagoon ); and he's preparing to do his Eagle Scout Project.

Bluebirds & Pink Butterflies

Yesterday was spent enjoying the sunshine, fresh air, and Kloyie's and Skyla's soccer games. Kloyie was Goalie for the 1st quarter and blocked 5 goals by the opposite team! Great JOB! She also hustled up and down the field at her Papa's commands to "Get in front of the ball!"

Skyla's game was at noon, and Heidi, Laila, and I headed back over to see her play. It was difficult to get her head into the game at first, but then she was running up the field as fast as her little legs would take her to "Get in front of the ball!"

Got some great pix of Kloyie's skills, but then my camera died; so I'll have to post some of Skyla's game next week. Don't ask me what the scores were -- all I'm there for is to support and enjoy the little girls! Who cares who wins?

4.11.2008

Happy Birthday, Eryn!

Eryn is the grand-daughter of Glen & DiAnne, and the oldest daughter of Paige. She is beautiful, talented and 17 today!

The Legends & Mystique of the Butterfly - There are many legends surrounding the butterfly...Some Indian tribes believe that the butterfly is the symbol of the Soul; That it is the symbol of Joy and the essence of Happiness; That Dreams are a result of the butterfly's wanderings through other Worlds; That butterflies carry wishes to and from the Spirit World and that they are the fertility of the Earth.

A 'night' butterfly is attracted to a flame, (just as the Soul is attracted to Heavenly truths) and burns in the flame (as trials must be endured to eliminate mortal sins) before experiencing the joys of the afterlife.

On April 11, 1991, Eryn Nicole floated into our World on butterfly wings. Her beauty (just like the butterfly) and sense of Joy can be breathtaking. When she dances, she floats as if on butterfly wings - with such ease, it almost appears effortless. And like the butterfly, she will choose when and where to light. Happy Birthday and May your year be filled with Love.

Thanks to Heidi & Heather for their contribution to this entry.

A Year . . . .

What a difference a year makes –

When you look at the person at your side,
Who so recently asked to share in his life
Or the one who has been there forever to share
When plans for a future together are an everyday thought
or a thought thrown by the wayside
And each person in your life is a priority –
Rather than an obligation.

When you gaze upon the sleeping angel in your arms
Or feel the tug of a toddler’s hand on yours
And know that they are your sole responsibility
And their very life depends on what you can do for them.

When unhappiness is calmed
Only the by the warm support of arms around you
When danger or restlessness comes upon you—
Then slowly ebbs away.

When a new day breaks with
Sun’s rays – newfound hope – and renewed faith
That you will be able to make it through another day
Another week, another month, and year
Because of the loved ones around you who want to be able to help.

What a difference a year makes --

If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

SNAP OUT OF IT!

The origin of April Fool's Day remains clouded in obscurity. Basically no one knows exactly where, when, or why the celebration began....that's part of the mystique of the silliness!

"The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year."
~By Mark Twain~

I worked with a gal who always had some scenario/scheme planned for her poor hubby on this day. She told me once about how she got some police tape and had her whole house cordoned off with it, and a policeman friend standing outside to prevent him from going in. A bit extreme and I'm sure he countered with something just as EVIL the next time around.

I've never been into practical jokes, so this day is about as mundane as any other in my life!

3.31.2008

Springs Eternal . . .

What is it that springs eternal - youth...hope...love?

Obviously, a week of aging has left its mark on me.

Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. Years wrinkle the skin, but giving up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear, and despair – these are the long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust. You are as young as your faith, and as old as your doubts; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fears; as young as your hope, as old as your despair. - Zoroaster

3.30.2008

I know you're probably getting tired of reading about this aging thing, and I'm just about done. Getting older is a funny thing, because it happens so slowly. Days run into months and into years. Thank Heaven it doesn't happen all at once! We look at each other, and it might as well be over 40 years ago when we first met, we feel no different -- or we don't feel the same! Some of us don't feel any older, even when little voices are calling us Grandma. However, we must face the facts that life is going by too fast and we are indeed aging. With that said, I ran across a little prayer that I would like to share:

Lord, Thou knowest better than I, that I am growing older and will someday be old. Keep me from getting talkative and from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject at every occasion.

Release me from craving to try and straighten out everybody's affairs.

Keep my mind free from endless details - give me wings to get to the point.

I ask for grace enough to listen to other's tales and endure them with patience. Seal my lips on my own aches and troubles.

Teach me the glorious lesson that it is entirely possible that I may be mistaken.

Keep me reasonably sweet, as a sour old woman is one of the crowning works of the Devil.

Make me thoughtful, but not moody; helpful, but not bossy, as I would love to have some friends in the end.

There is always something new to learn - a new weakness to turn into a strength.

3.29.2008

A stranger came by the other day with an offer that set me to thinking. He wanted to buy the old barn that sits out by the highway. I told him right off he was crazy. He was a city type, you could tell by his clothes, his car, his hands, and the way he talked. He said he was driving by and saw that beautiful barn sitting out in the tall grass and wanted to know if it was for sale. I told him he had a funny idea of beauty.

Sure, it was a handsome building in its day. But then, there's been a lot of winters pass with their snow and ice and howling wind. The summer sun's beat down on that old barn 'til all the paint's gone, and the wood has turned silver gray. Now the old building leans a good deal, looking kind of tired. Yet, that fellow called it beautiful.

That set me to thinking. I walked out to the field and just stood there, gazing at that old barn. The stranger said he planned to use the lumber to line the walls of his den in a new country home he's building down the road. He said you couldn't get paint that beautiful. Only years of standing in the weather, bearing the storms and scorching sun, only that can produce beautiful barn wood.

It came to me then. We're a lot like that, you and I . Only it's on the inside that the beauty grows with us. Sure we turn silver, gray too ... and lean a bit more than we did when we were young and full of sap. But the Good Lord knows what He's doing. And as the years pass He's busy using the hard weather of our lives, the dry spells and the stormy seasons to do a job of beautifying our souls that nothing else can produce. And to think how often folks holler because they want life easy!

They took the old barn down today and hauled it away to beautify a rich man's house. And I reckon someday you and I'll be hauled off to Heaven to take on whatever chores the Good Lord has for us on the Great Sky Ranch.

And I suspect we'll be more beautiful then for the seasons we've been through here ... and just maybe even add a bit of beauty to our Father's house.
May there be peace within you today.

May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be..

3.28.2008

I picked up my horoscope this morning and thought it was interesting - Your Horoscope for MARCH 28, 2008

You may need to slow down your pace a bit to rejuvenate yourself after the last couple of days, Susan. With matters especially having to do with the heart, it is essential that you take a more reserved and sensitive approach. Try to ground and center yourself. Instead of thinking about trying to conquer someone, try simply sitting back and receiving their appreciation and affection.

I didn't realize that it showed but I guess the last few days of b-day celebration is taking its toll. DiAnne had sisters, nieces, and extendeds to her home on Wed. where we enjoyed a delicious luncheon and each other's company. We had talked about going to Olive Garden, but it was fun to just be able to sit and visit, without having to feel rushed about getting up from a table so someone else could come in and sit down.

I've received so many cute b-day greetings and . . . Yes! Heather made me my little 'Beach Baby'.

I also got two bouquets that have brightened an otherwise gloomy day (it SNOWED!) I wonder if it was winter or SPRING the day I was born? Too long ago to remember. I have two soft pillows for my head, books from Barnes and Noble to lay in bed and read, theater and dinner and the best family and friends anyone could ask for! Thanks for a great b-day! Love y'all.
